Association The founders of the association “Memorial of Žanis Lipke” -
entrepreneur Māris Gailis, President of the
International Film Forum “Arsenāls” Augusts Sukuts and daughter-in-law
of Žanis Lipke, Ārija Lipke - conceived the
idea to set up a Memorial in the year
2000, right after the Commemorative Plate was placed on the wall of the
house
on Mazā Balasta street 8 in Ķīpsala. Themain objective is to draw the
attention of both local and foreign society towards the historical
phenomenon of Žanis Lipke and to conduct the
fundraising in order to build up
a contemporary
Memorial in Riga. ![]() ![]() |
![]() It was the Easter of 2000, when inaugurating the Commemorative Plate on the wall of Žanis Lipke’s house, the ex-Presdient of the Republic of Latvia Vaira Vīķe – Freiberga said:
“The World War II and Nazi occupation denied entire Hebrew people, a well as Romany and many more, their true value as humans. In times like those, Žanis Lipke was driven by momentum of another kind, his law was that of loving one’s neighbour as one loves oneself. [..] It would be worthwhile to turn this historic site into memorial place for future generations, testifying to the honorable in our past and bearing witness, for ages of our children as well as for visitors, of a unique personality, of an outstanding episode of our history.” |
